"Theoretically" my changes may allow blazes and such to come say hi through your nether portal. I would suggest starting on those defences!

Just one more block and I swear I'll stop.

It's never too early for a glass of wine and some zombie shooting.

The Snapshot

Posted Image

We have seen some interesting teaser pics from Dinnerbone over the last few weeks, and this Snapshot includes a number of features related to those screenshots!  A number of these will be familiar to everyone - item frames, stone walls, dyed armor - but there are a number of additional awesome features not mentioned before!  Check out the full list below:

  • Added item frames
  • Added cobblestone walls (yes, mossy too)
  • Maps now align to a grid, making it easier to create adjacent maps. Maps can also be cloned
  • Stairs now auto-arrange into corners. This is a test and may change based on feedback
  • Mobs can travel through portals
  • Leather clothes can be dyed
  • Removed the “wip block” from the creative menu
  • Added two new crops and associated items
  • F3+P will toggle the auto-pause when the window loses focus (it’s for debugging, mainly)
  • F3+H will toggle detailed item descriptions (also for debugging)
  • Added arrow-sensitive wooden buttons
  • Trapdoors can be placed in top-most position (based on cross-hair aim)

Two new crops??? That's awesome Smile Hopefully, Coffee Smile

Spoiler: Highlight to view

Edit: Ok, I actually watched the video and although it's not coffee, carrots and potatoes are awesome. Also, potted plants FTW! Stone walls are awesome and so is the ability to dye dog collars!!! No more, is that my dog?

The Witherskull is scary as hell. I wonder if they will put that thing in the End.

Just one more block and I swear I'll stop.

It's never too early for a glass of wine and some zombie shooting.

Penny Arcade Report interviews Notch. This part about Notch's next game is interesting:

Quote:

PAR: So how playable is… I hope I’m going to say this right. Ten to the see? (A quick note: I can’t begin to explain this game within the context of the interview, so dive in. Emulated computers and all. Also, spelled out it looks like 0x10c)

Yeah! You can pronounce it any way you want.

PAR: Is it in a playable state? There’s almost no information out, and people are hungry for news.

Notch: There’s a physics engine you can walk around and a room builder thing, so it’s kind of playable, but it’s nowhere near final. Which is frustrating. So I’m going to back to that now after PAX basically. And I might possibly start over, because it feels like… it’s not fun, the stuff you’re actually doing. If it’s not fun to walk around the spaceship then the game isn’t fun. So I need to figure that out and try to, not necessarily gamify, but add more instant gratification.

Oh, Notch. Do you ever finish the things you start? Oh, heck. I can't stay mad at you for long.

Minecon jusdt wrapped up and we've got some news about the planned upcoming 1.5 Update, which Jeb has dubbed The Redstone Update. I'll just go ahead and paste info from the wiki because my boss is waiting for me in the office next door.

Redstone Update

The Redstone Update is a planned major update labeled as 1.5. 1.5 will probably be released sometime in January 2013[1]

Contents

 [hide

[edit] Planned changes

Note: Most of the changes listed here have no detailed references since most of them were mentioned at MineCon 2012. Especially the Future Updates with the Minecraft PC Team[1] respectively the The Future of MOD API talk[2]

[edit] Redstone improvements

  • More predictable and consistent redstone behavior
    • The functionality of BUDs will be affected
    • Eliminating directional quirks
    • Most of the timings of redstone contraptions will change
  • Overall redstone will be more like analog signals
    • Redstone signal strength will matter (for some blocks)
  • The Capacitor block
    • Only outputs a signal if the input has a specific strength
    • Configurable like a repeater
  • A way of sucking up items into a container/transport items between containers
    • This will most likely be a revised form of the Allocator idea
  • Weighted pressure plates
  • Perhaps a Daylight Detector
    • Outputs a signal with a strength corresponding to the intensity of the sunlight
  • Redstone repeater lock improvements[citation needed]
  • Some Redstone bugfixes[3][4]
  • Perhaps a new ore for craftingthe new redstone devices
    • Will most likely be available only in the Nether, encouraging exploration of the dimension

[edit] Minecart improvements

  • New ways of transportingitems
    • Using minecarts similarly to Railcraft systems
    • New uses for storage minecarts
  • Filling and emptying of storage minecarts
    • Specific rails to empty them
  • The possibility of linking minecarts together (driven by furnace minecarts)
  • Rails to unload mobs and perhaps players when reached

[edit] Rendering engine rewrite

  • Current engine has some bugs
  • Will require a higher OpenGLfeature-set
    • Will include some sort of fallback for older hardware
  • Support for high resolution textures[5]
    • The internal layout of texture packs will change
      • Every block will have its own texture file
    • Supports the use of animated textures for all blocks[2]
    • The geometry of individual textures can differ
    • Not intended to support HD skins
  • Much faster overall rendering, resulting in more frames per second (FPS).[6][7]
  • Lighting fixes similar to the ones first introduced in snapshots 12w39a/b (during 1.4 development)[2]
    The features were:
    • Support for fancy lighting control[8]
    • Support for more realistic lighting, such as active furnaces only giving off light from their front surface[9][10]

[edit] Other

  • No new mobs
  • Perhaps fireworks for New Year's Eve
  • Perhaps a method of enchanting equipment with paper
    • The player would enchant the paper, then use an anvil to combine it with equipment
    • The anvil cost to do this would be very high
  • The Possibility of Ghast Fireballs' sizes to be edited via third party programs[11]
  • Slabs made up of Netherrack/Netherbrick

The official Minecraft forums have new info about the upcoming modding API.

Lazy pasting follows________________

Jeb, Dinnerbone, Grum, and EvilSeph have been discussing the upcoming Mod API in detail!  This is only a small look at the massive amount of information provided about the Mod API, so let's dive right in!

API Questions:

  • Will mods have the ability to modify text?

Mods can have config files that, when initialized, will be able to dynamically print text in a variety of ways.

  • Will mods like Optifine (which modify the engine directly) be supported?

The API will eliminate the need to write to the engine directly, allowing modifications that affect the game (as any mod will), without altering the game code itself.  Among other things, this will greatly simplify mod installation.

  • Can vanilla block behavior be modified?

Yes.

  • Will there be official community resources (tutorials, forums, etc) for modders?

Yes.

  • How will mods be distributed by modders, and downloaded by players?

Players will be able to download mods from the game client itself.

  • Will the API be able to add new mobs to the game through mods?

Yes.  Additionally, it will be possible to modify animated blocks (water, lava) as well as custom animated blocks.

  • Will the API be like Bukkit (an outside resource)?

No, the API will be integrated into the vanilla game, hopefully bypassing the need for exernal APIs.

  • Will client-only mods be supported by the API?

Not at this time, but as the biggest client-only modifications are already covered (texture packs, splash screen text etc), it didn't seem necessary.

  • Will the API remove the issue of mods being rendered inoperable when the game updates?

It is a target we want to hit for certain, but it won't really have that capability at launch, we don't believe.

  • Will mods need to be re-written from the ground up with the API's release?

While mods will need to be changed to accommodate the API, total overhauls shouldn't be necessary.  Even if a mod requires an overhaul for the API, it would only be a one-time occurrance.

  • Will there be any sort of content filter?

By and large, the community will police its own mods as it does now, but we are working to put a system in place to prevent malicious mods from being distributed.

  • What can be modified in the game using the API?

Everything.

  • Can the physics be modded?

Yes.

  • Will the API be on the XBOX or Pocket Edition?

Not by us, but you can ask the developers of each game, respectively.

Minecraft Questions:

  • Will mods like Optifine be added to vanilla?

Something even better.  Overall, the game engine is being simplified, taking most of the load off of the client, and having the server doing the heavy work, greatly improving SMP.
Smoothstone stairs are not planned.
No new mobs are planned.

I love that they have amped up the difficulty on hard. Also, the new zombie AI is going to be awesome and might make for a more interesting night time than it has been lately. Custom mob names?? I can finally name my dog Spike.  I'm already envisioning a use for the hoppers in a warehouse setting and the amount of redstone changes are going to make me rework everything I have wired.

Is the scoreboard command for adventure maps?

The texture pack change will enable easy mixing and matching. Now all they need is the mod manager and we will be good to go. Count this as my vote for Mo' Creatures on the server.

Just one more block and I swear I'll stop.

It's never too early for a glass of wine and some zombie shooting.

    • Used via /scoreboard command or command block
    • The scoreboard can be used to track deaths, players killing another player, players killing a mob, or players activating commands
    • The complicated system uses a combination of name, display name, and criteria, and track an integer number of points for players
    • Has team mechanics including custom name colors, friendly fire options and objective tracking per team instead of per player
    • Displays points below players nametags
    • Invisible players on a team can be seen using the SeeFriendlyInvisibles NBT tag
  • Commands
    • /testfor command
      • Tests for whether specified player is online (testfor [player]), or at specified coordinate and/or in radius (testfor @p[x,y,z], testfor @p[r=radius] or testfor @p[x,y,z,r=radius])
      • Signal output to any Redstone Comparators surrounding the command block like testing content of a chest
    • /effect command

      • Renamed Command Blocks use their name in the chat
  • Language files
    • Language files can be updated via the background downloader
      • A new Minecraft release is not needed to update the language files

Blocks & Items

Additions

  • Activator Rail
  • Block of Redstone
  • Daylight Sensor
    • The crafting recipe is 3 Wooden Slabs, 3 Nether Quartz and 3 Glass blocks
    • Outputs a signal with a strength corresponding to the intensity of the sun
    • Only works with the sun's light (not man made light such as torches)
    • Rain affects the sensor's output
  • Dropper
    • The crafting recipe is 7 Cobblestones and 1 Redstone
    • Places items in containers in front of them, if there is no container it will dispense the item without using it
    • A dispenser 'shoots' items at you, while a dropper 'throws' items at you[6]
    • Can face all 6 directions, with a different texture when facing up or down
    • Need redstone signal to drop items
    • Fires once when the input becomes powered
    • Redstone signal emitted when a Redstone Comparator is placed against it directly - signal length depends on its fullness
  • Hopper
  • Minecart with Hopper[8]
    • Crafting recipe is a hopper on top of a minecart
    • Can only be emptied by passing over a hopper
    • Can pick up items from containers when it passes over
  • Minecart with Spawner entity[9]
    • Only obtainable with world editors
    • Have only the entity not the item
    • Uses the same NBT format as a normal Spawner
  • Minecart with TNT
    • The crafting recipe is 1 TNT and 1 Minecart
    • Triggered by Activator Rails
    • Explodes even more violently the faster it goes
    • In Creative mode when left clicked while moving, the Minecart with TNT explodes
    • Doesn't destroy rails and supporting blocks
    • Still blows up redstone materials
  • Redstone Comparator
    • Based on the idea of the Capacitor mentioned at Minecon 2012
    • The crafting recipe is 3 Redstone Torches, 1 Nether Quartz and 3 Stone
    • It is the same as a repeater, but with 2 inputs
      • If input A is stronger or equal to input B, it either repeats the signal or outputs the difference between A and B, so this can be used as an easier way make redstone contraptions like Piston Doors
        • Output is toggleable by right clicking
      • If input A is weaker than input B, then there is no output
    • All containers output a redstone signal when a Redstone Comparator is placed against it directly. The strength of it depends on how full the container is and what disc number is used in a Jukebox
      • This works with Trapped Chests as well, meaning it can provide two redstone signals with different causes at the same time
  • Trapped Chest
    • The crafting recipe is 1 Chest, and 1 Tripwire Hook
    • Gives out a signal depending on the amount of players looking inside
    • Large Trapped Chests can be staggered with Large Chests to allow more compact storage
    • Transmit signal downward through one block. This does not apply horizontally[10]

  • Weighted Pressure Plate
    • Used to detect item drops
    • Gold(light) version reaches full strength at 60 items

    • Drops one snowball for every layer of snow
    • Each level of snow has its own height collision
      • The topmost layer of snow does not have collision, so the player is always slightly sunken in the snow
      • Visually, four layers of snow is the same height as a slab. However, five layers of snow has the same collision height as a slab
    • Crafting recipe is 3 snow blocks in a row to create 6 snow layers
      • For each thin layer of snow crafted, the player loses exactly half the snowballs required to produce it
  • Sandstone Double Slab
    • Place two sandstone slabs on top of each other
    • The block ID is 43:9
