The End: NCSoft finally issues a statement

Yes

NCSoft has finally responded to the "Save COH" campaign, via RPS, and... well, it isn't good news. Sad

Quote:
“We wanted to let you know that your voices have been heard and your concerns have been taken into serious consideration. We appreciate the overwhelmingly constructive and positive messages in the emails, notes, and packages you’ve sent in support of the game. It has not been an easy decision for us to close Paragon Studios and prepare to shut down City of Heroes. We’ve exhausted all options including the selling of the studio and the rights to the City of Heroes intellectual property, but in the end, efforts to do so were not successful. City of Heroes has a special place in all of our hearts, and we want to ensure its reputation and the memories we share for the game end on a high note.”

“Once again, we will be holding events throughout the process of preparing for the game’s end, and we encourage players and fans of the franchise to join forces and enjoy their time in a game that we’ve enjoyed supporting for more than eight years.”

It was a valiany effort against insurmountable odds of greed and stupidity of NCSoft.  Had to believe this is truly the end after 8.5 years of heroism and villainy Tears, very sad

I definitely want to get everyone we possibly can to gather up so we can get some screenshots of our namesakes and main characters together one last time.

Full of it. They could not have possibly 'exausted' all possibilities in the short while they had.

I agree with Peregrin, but I would've used a lot of profanity.

Paragon is doing some webcast in a couple hours and that got everyone excited. I guess it won't be good news...

Tears, very sad

It's good to have hope. It's also good to have a backup plan...

I wouldn't exactly say game over.  This was just some PR bullshit that NCSoft is pulling to try and save some of their reputation due to the outcry from players and everyone that has gotten involved.  I mean think about it, why are they suddenly coming out and saying 'We tried to save the game, but in the end we couldn't, too bad so sad'...it's cause of the ruckus being made and them trying to quell it.  In a way I take this as a good thing and might very well work to our advantage.

Until I see otherwise I am still holding out some hope for the game.

Um... we've seen "otherwise." There may be "unconventional" solutions, such as reverse engineered clients, but the game as we know it is dead.

I took this as a "We're not giving it away, we're not selling it, we're not continuing with CoH in any way, so stop emailing/sending letters/calling us."

Just one more block and I swear I'll stop.

It's never too early for a glass of wine and some zombie shooting.

Oops, this webcast is tomorrow at 1030am PST.  With the NCSoft news, I'm assuming it will be a thank you to everyone would tried to keep the game alive.

This is not a bad way to interpret the NC statement, since its exactly what they're trying to convey.

I know the game as we know it is dead, I've said as much before.  I'm not trying to be ignorant about things and honestly I have accepted the fact that the game may never see the light of day again come Nov. 30th.  However, given this posting by NCSoft, I can't help but have some sliver of hope that the game has a future if the Save CoH movement maintains momentum.

Yeah, that doesn't surprise me in the slightest. You don't cancel a game with zero notice and dismantle its studio on the spot if you're ever intending to do anything with it. I don't know why NCsoft CEOs decided to trash City of Heroes, but I don't doubt they decided to trash it. They may say they  tried to sell it, but they're either lying, or at the very least spinning. If they asked any prices, it was so they could pass a lie detector test and say "See? We did it!" I've no reason to believe they asked a realistic amount. If they were interested in moderate sums of money, they wouldn't have junked the game.

Right now, I'm counting my options and planning to save my characters. I'm very interested in the Titan Network project for constructing a "spiritual successor" game. The cynical among you may feel such a thing will never come to pass, and I fear the same, but I've managed to involve myself in a writing capacity, so I'm determined to do at least what I can to help out. And if it turns real, it might just be awesome.

Of all the things I've lost,
I think I miss my mind the most.

I've heard other folks had success copying locked-out chars to test and beta servers, and running Sentinel+ from there.

That was like the past seven weeks of being bummed out over this, concentrated into five minutes. Could you pardon me, I got something in my contact... Sad

Um yeah, I guess I should have just listened to you guys and NOT watched it.

Crying pretty hard now, dangit.   It really put the whole thing into perspective.  Yeah, I got tired of the game and felt I was done with it for a long time, but it is really like saying goodbye to an old friend.  I wish I'd been there for the screenshot event.

I have to get Ember into a screen demo record or something so I can be added in. I'm so sad I can't even explain it. I'm tearing up just thinking about the video and the last day.

Just one more block and I swear I'll stop.

I don't know... I really hate that pretty much the only decent MMO out there is going away, but I've chosen to not approach the subject with mourning and sadness. Think about it: The game was awesome, and it gave us all a ton of amazing memories, not to mention scores of really cool characters. Nobody can take that away from us - not NCsoft, not the creditors, nobody. So think back to that. Think back to all the crazy adventures we've had and try to hold on to the good of it.

Well, it's what I'm doing, anyway. I don't know if that works for you, guys, but don't think of it as all the stuff you're losing. Think of it as all the stuff you've gained over the course. That has to count for something, right?

Of all the things I've lost,
I think I miss my mind the most.

That's a great attitude, Sam. I don't know if I'm capable of it but that's the right way to look at it.
