I recall telling someone back in like, Issue 1 times, that I'd be here until they shut off the servers. I get to be a man of my word, whoopee...
So yeah, I'm bummed, sure. But I mean, I got to create some fun characters, have a lot of fun blowing shit up, met lots of cool people, so hell, it's not like it was all for nothing, you know?
Years ago I told a friend that if the game closed up shop tomorrow, I couldn't feel like they owed me anything more. That still holds true.
See you in Ouroboros,
Glad to hear from Gate. I was on a suicide watch for a him.
I'm touched by your concern, at the same time that I'm saddened by your estimation of my coping mechanisms.
So a lot of people are talking about takings screenshots, but there is something else I encourage people to do. Log in to the game and take demo records of your characters. This way you...well, someone, can go and make demo edits featuring the characters and your characters will continue to live on via that. This is possible because demo edits don't actually use the servers, it's all done on your own personal computer.
As for how to do a demo record, it's easy... just type /demorecord (whatever you want to call the demo file - character name would be best here) and it will be saved to a demo file in your CoH directory.
Awesome advice, Razor, thanks. I'll try to get as many as I can.
Thanks Razor. Can you explain this in more detail. I logged into Orange Dragon and typed /demorecord OD. I ran around a bit and then logged off. I check my CoH folder and don't see anything. Did I do it right? Is it saved in a different folder?
I feel like crying. I really do.
Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing. ~Abraham Lincoln

I just thought those exact same words =( Not my Cities! ;_;
I know I've been away for awhile, but I thought it would always be there when I came back. This feels like being told that your best friend has cancer and only a few months to live. Please excuse me, I have 7 stages of grief to go through.

I don't know if "looking for solutions" is a stage of grief, but that's where I am. City of Heroes was a major part of how I spent my time, not to mention what I occupied my mind with, so not having it will require some serious status quo changes, and I'm still not sure what I'm going to do about it. Get another MMO? Possibly, but which one? City of Heroes was the only one which didn't suck. I guess I can try Tera, since it's not that bad, but that won't last. There's really only one character design per race. Screw MMOs and stick to single-player games or more regular multi-player ones? I don't know...
I guess we'll have to wait and see. With City of Heroes gone, there may be a hole in the market for another game equally as imaginative to fill up, but I have my doubts. Far too many people like the same thing we've been getting for the last couple of decades, it seems.
Of all the things I've lost,I think I miss my mind the most.
Thanks for the CoH memories guys. I too found this family through Cryptic and Paragon Studios. Looking forward to finding more community building activities with you guys, but there will be so much that's just gone when the servers go dark.
We should make an effort to schedule a group pic in the next few days.
Edit: Yes, marq, I did miss the event scheduled for the 18th. See it now. Thanks.
Razor, i also need more info on this demo thing
Normally, I'd try to explain. However, as I myself don't know much about it, all I can do is direct you to the ParagonWiki page on Demo Recording. Also, I apologise for not being Razor

thanx a lot Sam, just tested it and it is great
This is the most depressing news I've had the misfortune of reading in a while. I haven't played much if at all in the past year and now I wish I had. I guess I assumed it would always just be there. Those that have said it feels like a friend died, I couldn't agree more. Starting with the Impossibles SG and then finding you guys, without CoX none of that would be possible.
Treees over on the CoH forums has been kind enough to make a compilation thread, which can be found currently at -
One of those rumors is giving me hope. A company would be stupid to not step in and try to take on the CoH property - it's got the infrastructure, development team and it's making money...and if NCSoft is hurting for money, by selling off the CoH property they are recouping some of their quarterly loss.
I have been ruined by the COH character creator. I don't know if any game will ever have all the options and customization that COH has.
I'm in mourning, and missing all my soon-to-be-gone characters (really, extensions of myself) already. COH has been a huge part of my life for 8 years, and I'm not sure how to fill the hole it will leave. I suspect Champions will be used when I'm jonesing for some superhero action, but it's just not the same.
Heyo, Adversity. This is MC from the Impossibles (yeah, from waaaaaaay back then), just stopping by to commiserate over this news. It's sad news to hear, but I'll still look back fondly over some of the awesome times our groups shared on Pinnacle.Cheers!
Hey, MC, great to see you...despite the events.
I've come to accept the news and I guess I could say I have made peace with it, but damned if the stuff going around doesn't give me a bit of hope for the game. Especially when things like this pop up.
So the devs were going to go and answer all these lore questions that people posted over a week and a half ago and the answers were supposed to go up on the 12th. Do we take it as a good or bad sign that the questions are still unanswered?
I think they are surprised and overwhelmed by all the fan support. I'm sure they are hoping that something happens. I know I am.
So, I can't actually experience "hope," but maybe the rest of you can view this optimistically. Thanks Felix/Gatecrasher/Generator for the following info.
Author Mercedes Lackey is an avid CoH player. She has been using her entertainment industry contacts to promote the "Save Paragon" cause. Posting here on the Titan boards she details some interesting, unverfied facts.
Razor has a better info-sifting ability than I do. Can you get more info about what she's saying?
Quote: As of Friday, Brian Clayton told me he had hoped to have news this week but that negotiations were still going strong. As of a few minutes ago, there was no further word. I assume this means nothing has changed.NCSoft has blinked. They are giving us our money back.NCSoft has blinked. They have given us a dedicated email address to send our comments and concerns to.NCSoft has (through Andy) announced that they are not interested in continuing to support the game and are committed to the Nov 30 shutdown date on the NCSoft side. This is what we know, anything else is pure conjecture.Point one: good. In business, no news is generally encouraging.Point two: VERY goodPoint three: VERY good, they are getting a bit shook up by our united frontPoint four: Nov 30 shutdown. Well this sucks a little, since I was hoping they would agree to something longer for a smoother transition, should we get a buyer, but it's still doable with a little downtime, depending on whether or not anyone still has the code for the OLD launcher around Paragon, and whether or not the deal will include the original servers.
I had been reading that thread, and a few others, yesterday and today...so I can't really provide any other info that what is there. There is a thread out there that links to an analysis of Paragon Studios and City of Heroes and the financials (in that it was doing good) and how NCSoft utterly fucked up by ditching it (despite their realignment stuff).
So basically, at this time all I can really do is help put a positive spin on this all. Yes, the game as it exists right now - meaning with NCSoft - is dead. They will not be picking it back up, which is ok. This means though, that it is possible that Paragon Studios might reassemble with new backing or some other producer may very well pick up the game - because who doesn't want a game that is making over 2 million per quater with the development team and infrastructure to a degree already in place? So we'll see what happens.
NCSoft's post entitled Player Services Status Update, which details some unspecific events and terms for player refunds.
Rock, Paper, Shotgun's long article on the topic including some encouraging observations.
NCsoft has an updated CoH Sunset Faq viewable here. Lots of info re: refunds and such
Also, RPS has details about the end of the universe events. Look here.

Double XP? Really? Double XP.FUCK YOU NCSOFT. I HOPE YOU GET CANCER AND YOUR MOTHER CHOKES ON A CHICKEN BONE.
That is some fucked up joke.
Just one more block and I swear I'll stop.
