I really don't have any words.
Well that was a little. Sudden.

This is the one piece of CoH news I never wanted to post. I really do not understand it at all. CoH was supposedly doing so well and NCSoft was supposed to be committed to it. Devs and other Paragon Studios people were just making posts yesterday and even earlier today about the future of the game and then this happens.
I just don't even...
Strange. I can't think of any games out there that will fill the niche. The creativity you can put into your characters is unparalleled, not to mention things that make this game unique.
I wonder if shoving my foot up Mr. Davis' ass fits in with NCSoft's longterm goals?
Can't say I will be buying another NCSoft related product after this.

This. I had previously discussed purchasing GW2. I loved GW and the no monthly fee is incredibly enticing. But for now I'll be holding off. I haven't been playing Cities at all and while the news was always inevitable, the timing is rather sudden unless the past year really has been all marketing speak.
It feels a bit like losing a bunch of friends. Thankfully we're still able to connect with Adversity.
I still never managed to ever get a character to level 50. Oh well.
Any idea when the servers will go dark? (I'm downloading a patch at the moment, so can't check for a few more minutes to see if they've already done so.)
By November 30th.
I wish I could log in, I can't...it makes me too sad.
Better log in soon and take screenshots of your characters.
Better yet! We should all log in together and get farewell group pics.
As I understand, NCsoft dropped the ball with their finances of late. Aion was doing incredibly poorly even after going F2P (it may have something to do that the game's crap and the pace of progression there is ass) and they faced enormous costs over Blade and Soul's Korean launch. After spending a ton of money getting Guild Wars 2 out the door, they're pertty much in the red financially and looking to make up the losses.
So, naturally, they cut City of Heroes. Because it makes sense. That's large corporate business for you, and right now I'll be sharing a bed with those people who excused piracy by saying that "Fuck you!" to publishers. I know NCsoft won't do it, but I do hope we'll eventually see a "private" server show up for the game. City of Heroes was one of the most creative, imaginative and different game out there. It inspired my imagination for a good third of my life the way no other game could, too busy as it was to spoon-feed me static lore and stomp my nose into the grind stone. Losing it is a major loss, especially in light of all the cool stuff that was being prepared. Poor guys at Paragon that lost theit jobs.
For what it's worth, a petition has been started to preserve the game. I suggest signing it and spreading the word. Even if it makes not a lick of difference (though given people were able to sway frikkin' EA over Mass Effect 3's ending, which is a feat), you lose nothing for trying, and the numbers are growing even as I look at them.
Of all the things I've lost,I think I miss my mind the most.
Ha ha ha! Petition.
I'm a businessman in "rel life." People who sign "internet petitions" clearly don't understand how business works. Mass Effect and CoH could not be more different from a business standpoint.
I'm beyond speechless. I seriously feel like I just found out that a friend died.

Just one more block and I swear I'll stop.
It's never too early for a glass of wine and some zombie shooting.
Yes, and if you were to read my post word for word, I acknowledged that. If you don't want to sign it, then that's fine, but again - what do you lose? And really, why reply with "ha ha ha?" Is City of Heroes shutting down really that funny?
I'm just completely sick to my stomach. This totally ruined my weekendd.
Whatchoo doing this weekend?
I am hoping, well trying to - cause let's be realistic here and the chances of it actually happening are probably non existant, that some other producer company thing will step in and try to take on CoH. If it is actually making a profit and getting new subs, then it could be attractive to another company to get the folks for it and make it happen.
But yeah, rose colored glasses and all that shit.
so if i understand corectly .....Effective immediately, all development on City of Heroes will cease and we will begin preparations to sunset the world’s first, and best, Super Hero MMORPG before the end of the year.... the end of the year.. hmmm.. 2012... the end of the world is near
Ok, so amidst all this terribleness, one of the cooler things is to see the old devs (BaB's and Castle) and current devs reveal their alter egos.
Like for example, if you have ever seen bAss_akwards on the CoH forums, turns out he goes by the redname Fire Man. This was actually a big surprise.
And if you had ever seen Tic Toc, turns out that was BaB's.
Curious to see the rest.
I blame Liefeld. He couldn't be a superhero and decided that we couldn't be ones either.
What a jerkassfacedickbuttfucktard.
'It will help you if you add the phrase "And save the world!" to the end of that. I do it all the time, it cuts down on arguments.'

I don't really know of any game out there like it. You could be anyone, your character grew how you wanted him/her/it to grow. And the game kept getting better at it. New costume parts, power sets, alignemnet options, AE... This game was a true joy to watch grow. Always excited to see what they were going to give us next. And the comunity... The comunity is great. I tried playing WOW first, because well, it's WOW and I had heard of it. But I could never find a team, only one guy at a time, and he'd always leave the moment the mish was over. COH was enirly different, people helped me get started, People were a joy to team with, I met Lady, and then she introduced me to Adversity, and that was an eye opening experience, and even the pugs tended to be at least tolerable human beings... Even the creepy one who wanted to date me cause I was running a female toon... And the game encouraged teaming, more so as it grew. Sidekicking, SG bases, even the new helper/help me status. But I am rambling. I guess what I am trying to say is simply that the game means alot to me, and I don't know how I will find something to replace it. And I really don't want to have to try.

Well, I guess we can hope for City of Heroes to get purchased by Perfect World... How depressing is that? But they did it for Champions and Star Trek to save Cryptic's derelict ass. I guess they could do it for City of Heroes. Pluss, Hellgate: London got revived a few years down the line. Then again, all of those were fairly "indie" and the people who owned them tanked and needed the money, so I'm sure the deal was easier. NCsoft is a fat-necked corporate entity that's finally acting like one, so I don't know that they'd be willing to sell the franchise wholesale. I mean, why would they, when they can sit on the license and do nothing with it? Isn't that what corporate publishers do with the studios they close down?
