Is there a game that you have NOT gotten early access to?  Smile

Yup.  I've only gotten beta access to three recently new games, TERA, FFXIV:ARR, and Wildstar.  Though a lot of the other ones out there didn't really interest me enough to try getting beta access.

Not me. It's a little too NCSoft for my tastes.

I hadn't been following this game for a bit now - thanks for letting us know Blasty.  Razor (or anyone else), do we have any confirmation of it's subscription fee and/or FTP details?  And Razor, if your NDA has been lifted, can you tell us your thoughts on the game?  While I tend to agree with Marqaha about NCSoft, I'd still like to see how this game pans out...

I'm going to preorder it.  I understand the NCSoft concern.  I just want to give it a try and see if it has any of the "CoH Magic".

Pax, the monthly fee is $14.99 I believe and less if you pay for more months at a time.  I know they have some sort of FTP model as well.  It seems a little confusing, but it's described on their website.

http://www.wildstar-online.com/en/  Is their website, which was just revamped, and includes information on the game.  The DevSpeak videos highlight all the major aspects of the game and include the humor that is the game as well.

The game is sub based, at $14.99 a month, but there are multiple month discounts.  Additionally, they have C.R.E.D.D., which is an in game item that counts as one month of playtime that players can buy through the online store and then sell to other players via the auction house.  Effectively, you "play to pay" if you went this route.

As for the game itself, I played a Stalker with the soldier path up to 26 via weekend stress test and other weekend press events, I never got a real closed beta invite.  I was kind of used to the combat mechanics already due to playing Tera, but that doesn't mean the game is easy necessarily.  The first 10 levels are pretty straightforward and much of a challenge, this way you can get used to everything.  After that, shit kinda hits the fan.

Quests are pretty much the usual...kill X, gather, ect.  The major difference is the way the kill quests are done - rather than have to kill 20 mobs, each mob will count for a percentage.  Minions count the least, while a lieutenant will count more (to use CoH terms) so if you want an easy route...go for it, just it will take longer.  There are also timed challenges that pop up when you do various things, like when you kill a certain mob you'll get a couple minutes to kill X amount more for rewards (such as gear, housing items, crafting items, ect).  I actually had a fun challenge when I ended up getting on a quest mount...I had to run over zombies.

As part of the soldier path, as I went through the different zones I would get soldier quests.  These include assassinations, holdouts, weapon testing, rescue missions and so on.  So this adds a bit of variety to questing as well.

Other cool things is the costume system, in that you can modify you gear to look like anything.  If you use cloth gear, you can make it look like leather instead if you want.  There's housing too, but at the lower levels it's cost prohibitive.

Overall the game is really fun, I love the sense of humor in the game.  Like when you die you get ridiculed for it if you rez at the holocrypt (it's all in good fun).  So I am definitely looking forward to the game.  I'd say to try and get a weekend beta key and try it out and don't let the NCSoft thing turn you off.  Carbine is a great set of folks and they're worth supporting.

Razor, I'm working this weekend, but when the next one comes around I'd definitely be up for playing.

I would definitely like to try it this weekend!

I am leaning toward ordering the game - would like to get folks input on the different pre-order levels.  Is the extra stuff worth the extra cost etc...

I am going for the deluxe one, just cause I like that kind of stuff.  However, it won't really make a huge difference on your game play if you don't get it.

And I'll PM you a code, Blasty.

I remember when we all said "I'll never buy anything NCSoft has a hand in, ever again!" I'm sorry

If it makes you feel any better, Marq, I still won't. Granted, my selfish, self-serving reasoning makes it that much easier, since NCsoft don't have anything I'm interested in anyway, but still - you have my vote Smile

Of all the things I've lost,
I think I miss my mind the most.

I actually don't have strong feelings about NCSoft one way or the other.

So the first pre-order beta is now over.  My stalker is basically level locked, so there wasn't much point in playing him, so I decided I would try playing some of the other classes to see what I might enjoy for alts.  I decided to try out an Esper, which is a ranged dps/heal class.

Image

This is my stalker's house, I had more stuff outside, but they degrade over time and I didn't renew them.

Image

This is my meager decorations inside.

As for the esper, it's pretty cool.  Concept behind espers is attacking with illusions...

Image

This is actually two abilities, Telekinetic Strike (your most basic ability) and Illusionary Blades (melee cone).  Part of the esper gameplay is certain abilities build psi points, which then allow for other abilities to be used, which consume the points and depending on the number of points, do more damage.

Image

Mind Burst, which is one of the finishers, is a bird that attacks multiple foes in a line.

Image

Then there is support abilities like Phantasmal Armor, which gives you a temp shield.

Bonus shot:  My newbie Mechari medic, for Pax.

Oh, and someone datamined the raid gear.  You can definitely tell that the Carbine folks worked on Wow.

I managed to play four of the classes up through level 10 and enjoyed it most of the time.  The pace got pretty fast once you got into the second or third zones, but at times it seemed almost too frantic. I ran into some bugs early on that made the game almost unplayable, but figured out a way around them by the second day.

Game play mechanics are pretty straightforward and it seems like the later stages of the game will get more interesting as you have a limited number of action slots and need to choose between a wide array of powers.

I will definitely have to give this some thought before ordering - I'm not sure I liked it enough for a hefty price tag up front as well as $15 per month to play.

I really like the idea of the LAS (limited action set) as it allows you to adjust your abilities as needed, which I found myself doing with the esper.  On my stalker, my abilities were pretty much the same all the time though...which leads into a pretty standard level of gameplay on it where I usually felt in control due to the amount of CC I have available and how that leads into very fast killing.  By comparison, the esper felt more frantic as I only had access to one CC ability and it has a longer cooldown and my heals were a bit frustrating in that one had a cast time, another was a small heal over time and the last one needed psi points to cast.

I would really like to get into the game a little more to see if it will be a fit for me - do you know if there are more beta weekends coming up and if the code from last weekend will work for future test weekends?

Other Random Game thoughts

I liked the pathing mechanics for quests - you get enough information to get where you are going, but not enough to keep you from having to think.

I played the Engineer, Spell Slinger, Warrior and Stalker classes and liked the Stalker the best so far.  I really would like to get a little further along with the Engineer to see how multiple robot minions works out.  I tried a different path on each character and only really enjoyed the Soldier.  I didn't get far enough into the game to really get much out of any of them, so my limited experience is no real gauge for how fun/useful a given path would be.

I just started looking into crafting at the end of the beta weekend, so not sure how good that will be.

I was not a fan of jumping into the 3rd (I think it was the 3rd) area and having 20 different quest givers pop up.  I would prefer to have a little more structure and lore and a little less chaos.  Having about 5 quests at a time feels about right.

There's going to be another beta weekend April 4th (it's every other weekend).  You'll probably need another code though, but that shouldn't be hard to do.  Hopefully we get the next major patch by then, which includes a UI revamp.

The paths are really there to add flavor that caters towards the player...I didn't care for explorer, as I have largely ignored it on my Esper.  I definitely like Soldier as you don't really have to go out of the way for the quests associated with it and the teleport power with it is especially handy.

Crafting will be handy for endgame, as usual.  However, the one thing that is really nice about the system (much like everything else in the game) is the amount of customization with it.  You can get all the crafting professions, but only have two active at a time, so you'll be able to do everything.  The system itself is nice too, takes a bit to understand how it all works, but I like it as there's none of that RNG for the most part.

I think getting bombarded by quest givers is more prone to the beginning and only in certain areas.  I recall having around 5-8 quests at a time for the most part.

I preordered the game and managed to download the game and create a character, but that's about it.  Next beta weekend I'm going to be on as much as I time.

Do you think waiting until next weekend to play WildStar sucks? Do you feel like being capped at level 17 is like wearing a soggy turtleneck? SO DO WE!

Starting tomorrow, Friday 3/28 at 7:00am PDT, the servers will be live and the party ain’t stopping until Sunday night! Also, the level 17 cap is gone and is now being replaced with a level 20 cap. My quick math skills tell me that’s an extra 3 levels! This bonus weekend is a way to get more testing time for us, awesome, as well as more game time for all of you, double awesome!

This is our way of gathering the feedback we cherish and saying thank you to all of our loyal testers. Which is why we would love it if you logged in this weekend, enjoyed the extra 3 levels and the bonus game time because it will greatly help us be that much more prepared come launch day June 3rd.

Stay Frosty!

So there ya go, Ant, definitely make sure to log in at least once every day so that you can earn those mystery boxes when the game launches.  And sorry, don't see any weekend keys floating around, Blasty.

May just have to bite the bullet and pre-order Smile

Question regarding the deluxe edition - do you know if characters get early access to use the hover board?  The cost difference is pretty small, so any extra perks are probably worth it.

Oh - and is there any chance that there will be an Adversity guild forming in Wildstar?

There's not much info on how the preorder hoverboard will work.  Currently most mounts are available at 14 and during the closed beta you got a hoverboard at 10 in the mail...rest of the time the boards are available at 25 I think.  So no idea.

And I don't plan on starting one honestly.  With the endgame activities a large guild is desired so I'll probably find one to join.
